"...Royce has an incredible sensitivity when teaching that I have never come across before or since. Learning was always intense and visceral. I left each session feeling liberated and light of heart. I have no doubt that his classes helped me as a Director, and also as a communicator in every day social and working life. I would recommend him to absolutely everyone."
Resident Casting Director: Finborough Theatre, London.
"This idea of excellent professional training for actors, combined with an awareness of the world’s needs and how to meet them, is a rare but much needed presence in the arts. Royce Sparks and his London Acting Experience program is doing just this very thing, and it’s a gem."
Tony Nominee, Original Broadway Cast
Into the Woods
is Royce Sparks' creation, a training
intensive held in London each year for performers wishing to hone their skills and mentality for the professional marketplace. It is open to either current professionals or performers preparing to enter the professional marketplace.
The London Acting Experience takes place over four weeks each year. It is broken up into two parts, each one two weeks long. Because of this it is designed for a variety of schedules and work commitments: participants may either take the entire intensive at once or take part one in one year, and return for part two the following year.
Parts one and two build on each other, and so it is extremely rare to take part two without having taken part one first. That said, part one isn't an 'acting class day one' intensive, from early on the work is extremely deep and thorough and relevant to the needs of actors working on further developing their process.
The intensive is aimed at performers either active in or preparing to enter the professional marketplace. It is not intended for people looking for a 'course on the side' or hobbyists, as you will most likely not appreciate the hours, or find the material too demanding for what you are looking for. The days are on average 12 hours long, with only two evenings off a week (not including visits to the theatre provided and scheduled by the intensive), and provide a thorough immersion.
The London Acting Experience is a yearly benefit for a selected charity, with a percentage of students' tuition going to that organisation. Each year's charity is selected based on current relevance to the world's needs.
The London Acting Experience is slightly different each year. It changes based on two things:
New trends, voices or events in the marketplace, as well as internal improvements on how to make the intensive a more rewarding experience. There are, however, some common traits that unite the vision of the intensive.
Here is a sample schedule:
Movement with Jerry Gardner
Tanaka Min with Royce Sparks
Q&A with Terence Stamp
Meisner with Royce Sparks
Text/Meisner with Royce Sparks
Please note this is not the set schedule for the intensive, as the specifics of time are adjusted to accommodate guest teachers, as well as sessions in different approaches and techniques.
