Questions about the intensive, application process, and more answered here:
IS THE INTESIVE FOR PROFESSIONAL ACTORS ONLY?
Not necessarily; what matters is the mentality behind going into the intensive. The hours are long, and there is an emphasis on maintaining a professional atmosphere of collegiality and a hard work ethic. This can apply to both professional actors and to those preparing to enter the professional industry. In other words, your accomplishments are important, but what is most relevant to this intensive is the attitude you are approaching it with.
I AM INTERESTED IN DIRECTING - IS THIS INTENSIVE A GOOD FIT FOR ME?
Yes, the discussion of the director's process is integral to the intensive. While you will be receiving acting training, you will also receive mentoring and input about how to work better with your actors to maximize the time in rehearsals or on set. You will have a thorough insight into the process of the actor and how that can be worked with, which is something many directors are lacking.
WHAT IS THE CORE ACTING TRAINING LIKE?
The core acting training is a combination of Meisner technique, Niki Flacks' Acting with Passion and the body work techniques of Tanaka Min. Add NIki link
I HAVE DONE MIESNER FOR YEARS AND I DO NOT WANT TO START AGAIN AT DAY ONE. WILL IT SUIT MY SKILLS?
This is a question asked often, and you are actually discouraged from asking it in the interview. The reason is this:
It implies potentially, but not definitely, a fundamental lack of understanding about the Meisner technique. The inherent nature of Meisner's work is that the scales and measurements of progress are not tuned in terms of building up more, but rather on taking away, the reduction of inhibitions, anxieties and fear about acting, releasing impulses and working fully off of another person. The idea of advanced cannot exist in this spectrum, as the fundamental value and strength of the work is that you do not require another person advanced in the work to be using the technique to its fullest potential.
More so, however, the question also implies a mentality about status in the technique that is fundamentally toxic to the progress of a group working together for the first time. If either of these sentiments reveal themselves in the interview, you will not receive consideration for a place.
WHAT ARE THE 'IGNITE' SESSIONS LIKE?
These are new to the 2016 intensive, and take the form of a facilitated discussion, planning and stretegising session over presented materials. The content will be unique to each session, focusing on a specific aspect of the acting industry, which includes topics such as the mind of markets, the evolution of industry, the psychology of people in the industry, and much more. Please note these sessions will probably be unlike any type of material you have encountered before, primarily stemming from a rationalist, skeptical perspective with a basis in cognitive and evolutionary psychology, and scientific reasoning, and as such may at times be quite provocative and challenging.
WHAT IS THE INTERVIEW LIKE, AND HOW CAN I PREPARE FOR IT?
The emphasis in the interview is placed on it being more informal, relaxed, more like a conversation. This allows both the interviewer and interviewee to get a sense of each others' personalities. The content of the interview will focus mainly on you as an actor, what your interest in the intensive is, and any logistical questions about scheduling, financing, etc. It is, in effect, a chance for you to see if the content, style and ethos of the intensive is a fit for you, and for Royce to see if you are a fit for the intensive's makeup and vision.
WHAT DO THE GUEST INSTRUCTORS TEACH?
The guest teachers come from a background and body of professional knowledge, wisdom and experience. When we approach them, we do not ask that they teach something to fit our 'curriculum.'. We have had several experiences of guest teachers throwing out their lesson concept when they met the group for the first time and going off of their instincts about what would better reflect their work and time with the group. The results of this have been incredible, the sessions igniting joy, excitement and deeper work all around, and so we stand by this commitment to our guest teachers.
DO GUEST TEACHERS EVER CANCEL?
The London Acting Experience has been highly fortunate in welcoming incredible members of the industry. With that said, a high degree of flexibility is needed at times. Guests are often professionals currently working, and projects can come up last minute. As such, it is common to have to reschedule guest teachers, or even attempt to find replacements in the event they cancel last minute. It has not negatively impacted the quality of the guests thus far, and we appreciate the patience and flexibility of all involved- the result is highly worth it.
